By Rev. Mark H. Creech
Executive Director
The Christian Action League of North Carolina, Inc. has a rich heritage of Christian activism. Dating back to the 1930s, CAL originated as an organization designed to address alcohol policy in the Tar Heel State. In 1958, however, the scope of its mission was expanded to address any legislation or public policy that was a threat to the Judeo-Christian way of life. Since that time, CAL has grown to become one of the most influential public policy organizations in North Carolina, considerably strategic to its moral climate.
These are critical times for the Old North State. Certainly no issue is more urgent than North Carolina's need for a State Constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. Should activists judges in the courts knock down North Carolina's current laws prohibiting same-sex marriage, the Tar Heel State could go the way of liberal Massachusetts, legalizing and elevating same-sex relationships on the same par with heterosexual marriage. God forbid!
What is more, there are many other pressing issues that often come up when the General Assembly convenes – legislative measures that have to do with alcohol sales, drugs, gambling, pornography, sex education, family, sanctity of human life, and religious liberty.
Yet every year, CAL struggles for funds!! And our ability to really make a difference is often hamstrung because of this.
For any group or organization to hire a registered lobbyist on just one issue for one year, it would typically cost between $15,000 and $50,000. For just pennies on the dollar, however, supporters of CAL secure Executive Director, Rev. Mark Creech, as a registered lobbyist to represent their Christian values on a host of different issues taken up by the State legislature. Rev Creech is highly respected among lawmakers and his influence is growing.
Rev. Creech and CAL's Board of Directors are determined with God's help to make CAL financially stronger and increase its muscle in the political process. But to succeed at this, CAL must increase its flow of contributions.
That's why CAL is announcing its new contributions campaign 1000 @ $100. Think of it! If CAL is able to garner just 1000 commitments, made up of individuals, churches, organizations, church auxiliaries, Sunday School classes, etc., that would give just $100 annually, it would increase CAL's budget by $100,000 and the outcome could be phenomenal.
If you really believe Christians should be involved in influencing the State for righteousness sake, this is one very important way to plug in and make a difference. One hundred dollars annually, that's all CAL is asking. That's hardly a sacrifice for most people and it rounds off roughly to $1.92 a week. Individuals would only need to give up a simple snack on a weekly basis to fit this into their budget. Still, such giving could influence the course of public policy in North Carolina for generations!
Just recently, Rev. Mark Creech spoke at the Homecoming service of Stewartsville Baptist Church in Laurinburg. After the worship service, Pastor Steve Owenby told Rev. Creech that Stewartsville Baptist would be placing CAL in their budget for $600 a year. "That should take care of six of the 1000 @ 100 that you need," said Owneby. Indeed! Only 994 to go!
Will you help? Will you make the pledge? Moreover, would you pass this need along to your Pastor - your Sunday School teacher - your youth group – your missions organizations – your Bible study group – the church softball team, etc.? Would you consider putting together a fundraiser as a missions project for this need – a car wash – a yard sale – a barbecue – a bake sale? There are so many creative ways that are relatively easy to raise just $100.
