Adult Alcohol Consumption

A comprehensive report on American health habits finds that 60 percent of adults drink alcoholic beverages and 20 percent binge drink, Reuters reported Feb. 26.

The Health Behavior of Adults report from the National Center for Health Statistics (HCHS) found that six in 10 adults surveyed were current drinkers in 1999-2001, while 25 percent were lifetime abstainers. Nearly one-third of adults were classified as light drinkers, which is defined as having three or fewer drinks per week. The study classified 5 percent of U.S. adults as heavy drinkers, defined as having seven or more drinks a week for a woman and 14 drinks a week for men.
