Alcohol – Fast Facts
- $116.2 Billion total spending on alcohol in 1999
- $34.4 Billion (30%) spent by adults who drink excessively
- $22.5 Billion (19%) spent for alcohol served to children aged 12 to 20.

Based on self-report of DSM-IV criteria, a 1999 Harvard School of Public Health study of 14,115 students at colleges and universities in 40 states found: 32% abuse alcohol; 6% are alcohol dependent; only 2% of those diagnosed with abuse and 6% diagnosed with dependence sought treatment.
Alcohol consumption is annually linked to at least 1,400 student deaths and 500,000 unintentional injuries on college campuses. Each year more than 600,000 college students are assaulted by other students who have been drinking. 70,000 rapes are reported annually on college campuses; 85% of the time, the perpetrator had been drinking, 58% of the victims were drinking.
