A state Supreme Court candidate requested additional funds from North Carolina's public financing system Tuesday after a nonprofit group began running television ads supporting her opponent. Appellate court Judge Ann Marie Calabria filed a complaint with the state Board of Elections, noting that the group has raised $207,275 for ads that support her opponent, Robin Hudson. Calabria argues that this entitles her to a similar level of "rescue funds" from the state. Read

Prosecutors said Adem used scissors to remove his daughter's clitoris in his family's Atlanta-area apartment in 2001. The child's mother, Fortunate Adem, said she did not discover it until more than a year later. The trial focused attention on a 5,000-year-old African practice that experts say is slowly becoming more common in the U.S. as immigrant communities grow. Read

An important part of that maturation is the refinement of people's spiritual commitment and behavior. A new study by The Barna Group (Ventura, California) shows that despite strong levels of spiritual activity during the teen years, most twentysomethings disengage from active participation in the Christian faith during their young adult years and often beyond that. In total, six out of ten twentysomethings were involved in a church during their teen years, but have failed to translate that into active spirituality during their early adulthood. Read
